Oberammergau Passion Play 2022 + Eastern Europe Pilgrimage

Oberammergau Passion Play happens once every 10 years in Germany, approximately 60 miles away from Munich. In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore.

The villagers were answered by God and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. The promise has been kept until today. From May 16th to October 4th 2020 the 42nd Passion Play will take place in Oberammergau.

FUN FACT: The play is performed only by locals who live there and it will be in German, as it has been since 1634. Despite the play being in German language, tickets are always almost completely sold out as it occurs only once a decade. A textbook will be included which has English translation. The locals which include the directing team, the actors, choir, orchestra, stage team and the logistics team have been preparing diligently and meticulously for your viewing pleasure.

The first performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play was performed in 1634 at the cemetery next to the parish church – on a simple wooden construction on top of the fresh graves of the plague victims. Only in 1830 was the stage relocated to the Northern edge of the village. Now, we will be able to sit in the auditorium of the Passion Play Theatre which was last renovated in 2000.

Oberammergau and its residents combine history, tradition and art with devotion to their hospitality and region. Apart from the Oberammergau passion play, we will also be on a pilgrimage in Eastern Europe. Countries include: Germany, Poland, Czech Republic & Austria. If you have already been to Eastern Europe, why not visit it again? Every pilgrimage is a different experience and we have had many pilgrims travel with us to the same destinations.

Unfortunately our 2020 Departure: 23 August 2020 (16 Days Full-Board Pilgrimage) will be postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic. Spiritual Director will still remain the same: Fr. Patrick Massang CSsR. Our 2020 pilgrimage departure signup was full, but you have a chance now to join our 2022 pilgrimage, contact us immediately to put yourself on our tentative wait list!  (No deposit required to be on the wait list for now until our 2022  Passion Play dates are firmed up!)

The Passion Play begins with the entry into Jerusalem and tells the passion story from the Last Supper to the crucifixion ending with the resurrection. Don’t miss out on this chance that comes around only once every 10 years… Otherwise the next time you can experience this will be in 2030.
